What language do you speak? CD, mp3 download, or stream it?

cdThis past week I have had a major need for some new music. Ok, maybe I don’t need it but spring in the air … I wanted some new tunes. I am really having a hard time making the switch from CD’s to mp3 download. It was Friday afternoon, the sun was shining and I wanted some new music for my blackberry (sure I could put it on my ipod but I don’t always carry it). I look online fine anything I want… I was looking at Rascal Flatts, Justin Timberlake (a guilty pleasure, sorry), and The Brothers Johnson. Yes, very different music but that is besides the point. I couldn’t hit the buy button. Why? I wanted something tangible for my purchase. I want to hold the CD case in my hand. I want to read the album cover to see who the artist thanks. I have loved to do that since I was a kid… buying my cassette tapes (SO I am not that old). I even went to the store to buy the CD’s. BUT I didn’t buy anything there either… this time because I couldn’t see spending $12.99 or more for the music when I could get it online for $9.99 or less. Where does that leave me at the moment? With NO new music all because I can’t seem to make the transition to mp3s. Its silly really. If I would just buy the mp3s I wouldn’t have to load the music on to my computer, then to my blackberry. I could knock out the middle man. I could help the environment by not buying the plastic case with plastic covering. I could go on and on…

It shows me I am still, and will always be, a digital immigrant. I may have the accent of a digital native but deep down I’m not quite there.

Digital Natives (and anyone else) have so many options that they are comfortable with for music. Sure you can buy it to put in your iPod, mp3 player, phone, or just on your computer. BUT if you are connected to the internet who needs to buy any music. You can stream or download it. Watch videos on Yahoo! music or YouTube. Listen to the music in iTunes, Amazon, or the artist’s own site.

So what language do you speak? I am definitely a digital immigrant with a pretty heavy accent. I just wonder if any other immigrants have quirky moments like this… if so I would love for you to share. Tonight … I am going to try to make my accent a little stronger… I am going to hit the buy button and download the music… oh, I will miss the CD cover reading!
